Trump Pushes U.S. Lawsuit Against Drug Companies Over Opioids

 

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday again pressed U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions to sue drug companies over the nation's ongoing opioids crisis.

"I'd like to bring a federal lawsuit against those companies," Trump said during a meeting of his Cabinet at the White House.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Scarlett Johansson's role as Marvel superhero Black Widow catapulted her to the top of Forbes' annual list of the world's highest-paid actresses on Thursday, landing her ahead of Angelina Jolie.

Johansson, 33, took in $40.5 million in pre-tax earnings from June 1, 2017, to June 1, 2018, quadrupling her income from the previous year, according to Forbes' calculations.




'Queen of Soul' Aretha Franklin, 76, Dies at Home in Detroit

(Reuters) - Aretha Franklin, the preacher's daughter whose powerful voice made her the long-reigning "Queen of Soul" with such hit songs as "Respect" and "Chain of Fools," died on Thursday at the age of 76, officials said.

Franklin, who won 18 Grammys and had some 25 gold records, died at her home in Detroit surrounded by family and loved ones, her publicist said.




Newspapers Across U.S. Rebuke Trump for Attacks on Press

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hundreds of U.S. newspapers on Thursday launched a coordinated defense of press freedom and a rebuke of President Donald Trump for denouncing some media organizations as enemies of the American people.

"A central pillar of President Trump's politics is a sustained assault on the free press," said the editorial by the Boston Globe, which coordinated publication among more than 350 newspapers.




Schools Hit as Militants Seek Soft Targets

KABUL (Reuters) - A suicide bomb attack on a group of teenagers studying for university exams in Kabul on Wednesday shocked Afghanistan but it was only the latest in a series of attacks on schools which have proved an easy target for militant groups.

Rapper to Fund Cambridge University Scholarship for 2 Students

 

LONDON (Reuters) - Rapper Stormzy said on Thursday he will fund two black British students to go to Cambridge university through a scholarship, after criticism of some top UK universities that their admissions processes do not do enough to ensure diversity.

His move came as a record proportion of 18-year-olds in England and Wales learned they will be heading to university after receiving their A-level exam results.




U.S. Tariffs to Stay on Turkey, Qatar Offers Ankara Aid

ISTANBUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Wednesday ruled out removing steel tariffs that have contributed to a currency crisis in Turkey even if Ankara frees a U.S. pastor, as Qatar pledged $15 billion in investment to Turkey, supporting a rise in the Turkish lira.
