On Human Rights Day, UN Urges Everyone to Stand Up for Universal Rights

Countries around the world mark International Human Rights Day December 10.

As disrespect for basic human rights continues to be widespread in many parts of the globe, the United Nations is calling on everyone to stand up for universal rights.

"The time for this is now. We the peoples can take a stand for rights. And together, we can take a stand for more humanity," the world body said in a statement.




Obama Orders Review of US Election Hacking

President Barack Obama has ordered the intelligence community to conduct a "full review" of "hacking-related activity aimed at disrupting the 2016 U.S. presidential election."

The announcement comes as pressure is mounting from Democratic and Republican members of Congress who are calling for a thorough and public investigation into Russian interference in the election.

Eric Schultz, White House Principal deputy press secretary, told reporters Friday there has been a pattern of "malicious" cyber activity timed to coincide with U.

Trump Campaign Spent Less Than Clinton

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump put $66 million of his own money into the presidential campaign, according to disclosures filed Thursday night.

Federal Election Commission reports say that in the final days of the campaign, Trump spent $94 million dollars, while his opponent, Hillary Clinton - who had a larger campaign fund than Trump - spent $132 million in the last days of the race to the Oval Office.

Still, the brash billionaire beat out the former secretary of state in a stunning political upset, that many, including the media, did not see coming.




Grim Tally Soars: More Than 50,000 Overdose Deaths in US

More than 50,000 Americans died from drug overdoses last year, the most ever.

The disastrous tally has been pushed to new heights by soaring abuse of heroin and prescription painkillers, a class of drugs known as opioids.

Heroin deaths rose 23 percent in one year, to 12,989, slightly higher than the number of gun homicides, according to government data released Thursday.

Deaths from synthetic opioids, including illicit fentanyl, rose 73 percent to 9,580.
