Pakistani Actor Under Fire for Praising 'Terrorist'
Internet users in Pakistan have criticized a well-known film and television actor for a recent tweet he posted, praising the leader of a religious charity that has launched a new political party, but who also is listed by the United States among "global terrorists."

Actor Hamza Ali Abbasi's controversial tweet was about Hafiz Muhammed Saeed, whose religious charity launched the new Milli Muslim League. The party unsuccessfully contested a by-election Sunday in Pakistan's second-largest city, Lahore, for a National Assembly seat once held by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, whom the Supreme Court ousted in July.

Leaders to Tech Firms at UN: Yank Terror Postings in 2 Hours

The heads of Britain, France and Italy are setting an ambitious goal for tech companies to tackle online postings that promote terrorism: Take them down within an hour or two.

Convening world and tech leaders Wednesday at the United Nations, British Prime Minister Theresa May said that internet companies are making progress but need to go "further and faster" to keep violent extremist material from spreading online.

The average lifetime of Islamic State extremists' online propaganda shrank from six days to 36 hours in the first six months of this year, May said.

US Department of Education Changes College Sexual Assault Guidelines

The U.S. Department of Education has withdrawn 2011 guidance on how colleges should handle accusations of sexual assault, saying the policy "failed to ensure fundamental fairness." A set of interim guidelines has been disclosed.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said in a release Friday that the interim guidelines "will treat all students fairly."

"Schools must continue to confront these horrific crimes and behaviors head on," she said.

US to Award $59 Million for Opioid Addiction Treatment

The U.S. Justice Department has announced it is putting nearly $59 million toward fighting the epidemic of opioid drug addiction.

In a news release Friday, the department cited preliminary figures from the National Center for Health Statistics showing that drug overdose deaths in the United States rose 21 percent from 2015 to 2016. In 2016, a record high of around 65,000 people died from drug overdoses, driven by the opioid crisis.

McCain Will Not Support GOP Health Care Bill

U.S. Senator John McCain has announced he cannot "in good conscience" vote for the Republican health care overhaul, meaning the GOP is unlikely to be able to repeal and replace Obamacare by Sept. 30.

McCain joins two other Republicans who have pledged to vote no: Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky and Senator Susan Collins of Maine. Without those three votes, Republicans in the Senate will not have enough support to pass their health care bill.

McCain said in a statement Friday that he could not support the bill without "knowing how much it will cost, how it will [affect] insurance premiums, and how many people will be helped or hurt by it.

Miss Turkey Dethroned Over 'Unacceptable' Tweet on Failed Coup

Organizers have stripped Miss Turkey 2017 of her crown over a social media posting that was deemed insulting to the memory of the 250 people killed while opposing last year's failed military coup.

Miss Turkey organizers said the 18-year-old Itir Esen was dethroned Friday -- a day after she won the contest and the right to represent Turkey at the Miss World contest in China -- over a tweet they described as "unacceptable."

Media reports said a flippant remark that the model and university student had posted on Twitter as the country held memorials for the victims on the anniversary of the July 15, 2016, coup attempt, had caused uproar on social media.

Iraqi Teenager Charged in London Subway Bombing

British police on Friday charged an 18-year-old man with attempted murder following the bombing of a London Underground train last week that injured 20 people.

The man, Ahmed Hassan, reported to be from Iraq, was arrested in the port of Dover -- a popular departure point for ferries to France. He also was charged with the use of an explosive, police said.

Following Hassan's arrest, police searched the suburban home of a couple that fostered refugee children, where he had been living.
