U.S. Home Sales Sag as Prices Race to Record High

By Lucia Mutikani

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. home sales unexpectedly fell in June, posting their third straight monthly decline as a persistent shortage of properties on the market drove house prices to a record high.

The report on Monday from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) added to last week's soft homebuilding data in suggesting that the housing market lagged an apparent acceleration in economic growth in the second quarter.

U.S. Republican Unveils Bill Calling for Carbon Tax

By David Morgan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Republican lawmaker in the U.S. House of Representatives unveiled a bill calling for a carbon tax on Monday, saying he hoped the legislation would at the very least renew a U.S. debate on climate change that has languished for a decade.

Representative Carlos Curbelo, a member of the House tax committee who faces a tough re-election bid in Florida, said the legislation, called the "Market Choice Act," enjoys small but growing support among Republicans, who in recent years have been better known for knee-jerk rejection of carbon tax proposals.

The National Weather Service issued flood warnings and watches from eastern North Carolina to southern New York state, with the region expected to receive 3 to 5 inches of rain on Monday, after areas were soaked with up to 7 inches over the weekend.

Scientists Peer into Heart of Hurricanes to Improve Intensity Forecast

By Jon Herskovitz

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Despite advances in predicting where hurricanes are heading, forecasters are still struggling to determine a crucial factor in deciding emergency measures and evacuations: their intensity.

With a better way to predict a storm's power, or intensity, people on the ground will be more prepared in knowing whether a hurricane headed their way will cause devastating floods and winds that can uproot trees like Maria, which devastated Puerto Rico last year, or just shake branches and rattle windows.
