Houston Police Hunt Clues in Killing of Bush Doctor by Bicyclist


AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Houston police are studying surveillance video and following up on tips in the killing of a cardiologist who once treated former U.S. President George H.W. Bush and was fatally shot while riding a bicycle in the city's medical center, authorities said on Saturday.

Mark Hausknecht, 65, was killed on Friday morning by a man thought to be in his 30s who fired at least two shots at him from a passing bicycle as the doctor rode to work at the center, which is home to several hospitals and medical offices, police said.

FBI Releases Documents on Former Trump Adviser Surveillance

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The FBI on Saturday released documents related to the surveillance of former Trump presidential campaign adviser Carter Page as part of a probe into whether he conspired with the Russian government to undermine the 2016 U.S. election.

The 412 pages, mostly heavily redacted and made public by the Federal Bureau of Investigation late Saturday, included surveillance applications to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and warrants surrounding the investigation into Page.

Gunman Arrested after Deadly Los Angeles Store Hostage Standoff

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police in Los Angeles arrested a man who took hostages and barricaded himself inside a Trader Joe's store on Saturday, ending a three-hour standoff during which he fatally shot a woman inside, authorities said.

The man, who was being chased by police after he was suspected of repeatedly shooting his grandmother and another woman in a separate part of the city, crashed his car outside the Trader Joe's, where he exchanged gunfire with police and entered the crowded store.

Hundreds of Syrian 'White Helmets' Evacuated by Israel to Jordan


JERUSALEM (Reuters) - About 800 members of Syria's White Helmets civil defense group and their families were evacuated via Israel to Jordan on Sunday from southwest Syria, where a Russian-backed Syrian government offensive is under way, media said.

In a statement, the Israeli military said it had completed "a humanitarian effort to rescue members of a Syrian civil organization and their families .

Cuba's Draft Constitution Opens Path to Gay Marriage


HAVANA (Reuters) - The draft of Cuba's new constitution opens the path to gay marriage by defining matrimony as between two individuals rather than between a man and a woman, a top government official told parliament on Saturday.

The Caribbean island nation has made great strides over the past decade on rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, after persecuting them in the early years after its 1959 revolution and sending many to correctional labor camps.
