Russian-backed Air Strikes Hit Islamic State in Southern Syria

AMMAN (Reuters) - Russian and Syrian jets stepped up their bombing of an Islamic State bastion along the Jordan-Israel border in southwestern Syria, as the militants pushed into areas abandoned by other rebel groups, diplomatic and opposition sources said.

Islamic State-affiliated forces entrenched in the Yarmouk Basin, which borders the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and Jordan, also repelled a ground attack by the Syrian army and its allies, the sources added.

Trump Tweets It Looks Like His Campaign Spied upon Illegally


(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Twitter on Sunday it was looking more and more like his campaign for the 2016 presidential election had been illegally spied upon.

Trump issued the tweet after saying documents about his former presidential campaign adviser Carter Page confirmed with little doubt that the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation had misled the courts.

Typhoon Winds Hit Shanghai, Disrupting Flights and Shipping


BEIJING (Reuters) - Typhoon Ampil hit Chinese financial hub Shanghai around midday on Sunday, bringing heavy rainfall and disrupting transport and shipping.

Magnitude 5.9 Quake Injures Nearly 130 in Iran


DUBAI (Reuters) - A magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit western Iran on Sunday, injuring at least 128 people, hours after two quakes struck Hormozgan province in the south, state television reported.

Houshang Bazvand, governor of the western province of Kermanshah, said that most of the 128 who received treatment did not require hospitalization, the television station added.

A 28-year-old man was arrested by a SWAT team after a crime spree that started with a shooting and kidnapping and ended in a hostage situation at a Trader Joe's store in Los Angeles.
Police were chasing the suspect after he shot two women and kidnapped one of the victims; he fired at police officers before crashing outside of the store, where a shootout between officers and the suspect killed a female bystander.
