April 25 (Reuters) - - Amanda Farris got an ATM card from her father when she was about 13. Her dad told her to treat it like cash and taught her how to tap her allowance and the money she made working odd jobs.

Now, at 25, Farris and her husband are fully independent financially from their parents.




Prison Workers Indicted for Contraband Smuggling

 

(Reuters) - A federal grand jury has indicted 14 former South Carolina corrections employees on charges of smuggling contraband into prisons in exchange for bribes, the State newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The indictments were unsealed on Wednesday, the paper said, little more than a week after seven inmates died in a riot sparked by a fight among prison gangs over turf and contraband at South Carolina's Lee Correctional Institution.




U.S. Congress Prepares for Fight over Expected Trump Spending Cuts

 

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration is preparing to submit to the U.S. Congress up to $25 billion in immediate spending cuts, including possible reductions to social safety net programs, lawmakers said on Wednesday, in a move that could upend a budget deal enacted last month.

The White House plan, which has not yet been unveiled, would call on Congress to rescind funding already enacted into law.

United States President Donald Trump has changed his mind about withdrawing American military support in Syria after meeting with his French counterpart in the White House.
 
Trump mentioned that he now wants to try a long-term strategy in Syria, something that he has been opposed to since taking office.



Rain Will Push into the Deep South and Southeast Over the Next Few Days

 
The eastern half of the U.S. looks set to be hit by further rounds of rain and severe weather which will add to the flood risks in portions of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.
 
Wednesday will see the arrival of a band of rain moving from the Central and Southern Plains into the Deep South moving into the Southeast by Thursday and extending along the Mid-Atlantic by Friday.



2 Police Officers, Civilian Shot in Dallas at Home Depot Store

 

(Reuters) - Two Dallas police officers were shot and critically wounded on Tuesday at a Home Depot Inc store and a civilian was also shot in the incident, Dallas police said on Twitter.

Officials were searching for a suspect, according to the local CBS affiliate. Live television footage from the local Fox affiliate, KDFW, showed several police cars outside the Home Depot store.
