Islamic State Fighters in Afghanistan Kill at Least 15 Taliban


MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Islamic State fighters attacked the house of a Taliban commander in the northern Afghan province of Sar-e Pul on Tuesday, killing at least 15 people as they were attending a prayer ceremony, the provincial governor's office said.

4 States Sue U.S.


NEW YORK (Reuters) - Four U.S. states sued the federal government on Tuesday to void the new $10,000 cap on the federal deduction for state and local taxes, included as part of the 2017 tax overhaul signed by President Donald Trump.

Spain's Constitutional Court Blocks Latest Catalan Independence Motion


MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's Constitutional Court said on Tuesday it had blocked a motion approved by Catalonia's parliament to resume steps to declare independence of the wealthy northeastern region.

The court's formal suspension of the secessionist motion approved on July 5 by the Catalan assembly in Barcelona followed an appeal against the move filed by Spain's central government in Madrid.

Russian Establishment Chalks Up Trump Summit as a Win for Putin

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's political and media establishment heralded talks between the Russian and U.S. leaders in Helsinki as a victory for Vladimir Putin in breaking down Western resolve to treat Russia as a pariah.

"The West's attempts to isolate Russia failed," read the headline on a report on Monday's summit meeting in state-run newspaper Rossiisskaya Gazeta.

Pennsylvania Woman Charged after Baby's Death Blamed on Drugs in Breast Milk


(Reuters) - A Pennsylvania woman was charged with criminal homicide for the death of her 11-week-old son after an autopsy showed the baby had died because of drugs in the mother's breast milk, prosecutors said.

Samantha Jones, 30, had been prescribed methadone to help her overcome her addiction to painkillers, and took it during pregnancy and after giving birth, according to a statement from Buck's County District Attorney's Office dated July 13.

School Buses Collide in New Jersey, 23 Children Injured


(Reuters) - At least three school buses collided in southern New Jersey on Monday, injuring 23 children and an adult staff member returning from a summer day camp, police officials said.

All 24 sustained minor injuries in the crash and were taken to a local hospital, Medford Township Police Chief Richard Meder said.

New York Police Ready to Act in Chokehold Case

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Police Department gave an ultimatum to the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday, saying it would proceed with disciplinary proceedings against the officers involved in the 2014 chokehold death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man, absent action by federal prosecutors.
