GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States' nominee to lead the United Nations migration agency denied on Monday that he was anti-Islam while acknowledging a controversy over some of his social media posts and retweets in the past.

Republican Senator Joins Call for Facebook CEO to Testify about Data Use


WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Senator John Kennedy has joined his Democratic colleague Amy Klobuchar in calling on Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg to testify before Congress following reports that a political consultancy gained inappropriate access to data on millions of Facebook users.

In a joint letter, Kennedy and Klobuchar asked Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley to hold a hearing with Zuckerberg and the chief executives of Alphabet Inc's Google and Twitter Inc, reflecting mounting bipartisan concern in Washington about how the companies share personal user data.

Turkey Says its Forces Won't Stay in Syria's Afrin Region


ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish forces will withdraw from the Syrian border region of Afrin, leaving it to its "real owners", once it has been cleared of "terrorists", Turkey said on Monday.

Turkey and its Syrian rebel allies swept into the regional capital, also called Afrin, on Sunday, raising their flags in the town center and declaring full control after an eight-week campaign against the Kurdish YPG militia.

Large Retailers Urge Trump Against China Tariffs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Several large retail companies, including Wal-Mart <WMT.N>, Target <TGT.N>, Best Buy <BBY.N> and Macy's <M.N>, are making a direct appeal to President Donald Trump not to impose massive tariffs on goods imported from China, in a letter sent to the White House on Monday.

Severe Weather Chances Increase Across the South

The active weather of the last few weeks does not show any sign of slowing down in the coming days as the latest week begins with a major tornado risk in the Deep South and Southeast.
Computer models are currently predicting the storm which will begin striking parts of the South and Southeast from Monday onward could become a significant Nor'Easter causing more damage to the Mid-Atlantic than the Northeast by Wednesday.
