Fraud Alert: New Fraud Scheme Targeting Families of Unaccompanied Children


The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General is alerting the public about a new fraud scheme that preys on the families of unaccompanied migrant children entering the United States.

These children, apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security, are transferred to the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement  (ORR) within the Administration for Children and Families, an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Iowa, Illinois Investigating Infections Linked to McDonald's Salad


(Reuters) - The Iowa and Illinois health departments said on Thursday that they were investigating cyclospora infections linked to salads at McDonald Corp's <MCD.N> restaurants.

McDonald's shares fell 1.4 percent after-hours on Thursday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said it had seen about 90 cases, and the Iowa Department of Public Health said it had recorded 15 cases.

Woman Survives 7 Days on Radiator Water after California Crash


(Reuters) - An Oregon woman who disappeared a week ago was rescued from the bottom of a California coastal cliff where she survived by drinking water from the radiator of her wrecked sports utility vehicle, authorities said on Saturday.

Angela Hernandez, 23, of Portland was found by a pair of hikers on Friday evening after they saw her wrecked Jeep Patriot SUV partially submerged at the bottom of a 200-foot cliff in the Big Sur area, said Monterey County Sheriff's Office spokesman John Thornburg.

Syrian Forces Seize Village in Southwest, Widening Offensive


BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian government forces seized a village in Quneitra province on Sunday, their first advance against insurgents in the region adjoining the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights since launching a major offensive in the southwest, a war monitor reported.

The village of Mashara, about 11 km (7 miles), from the Golan frontier was captured after heavy shelling, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Explosion in a Building in Gaza, 2 Dead, One Wounded


GAZA (Reuters) - Two Palestinians were killed and one was wounded in an explosion on Sunday in a building in Gaza, health officials said.

The cause of the blast, hours after a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants in the enclave was announced, was not immediately known.

Firefighter Dies Battling Blaze Near California's Yosemite


(Reuters) - A firefighter was killed on Saturday while battling a wildfire burning near Yosemite National Park, California state fire officials said, bringing to at least 10 the number of such deaths this year as wildfires rage across the U.S. West.

Braden Varney was killed on the fireline while operating a bulldozer at the Ferguson Fire early this morning, said Scott Maclean, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire).
