Religious Leader, Digital Economy Advisers Sever Ties With Trump

The head of New York City's largest evangelical church has resigned from President Donald Trump's unofficial panel of evangelical advisers, one of the latest resignations in a string of high-profile withdrawals from advisory boards serving the president.

A.R. Bernard, head of the 37,000-member Christian Cultural Center, announced this week he submitted a formal letter to Trump on Tuesday announcing his withdrawal.

Tuesday was the day Trump gave a press conference from Trump Tower in New York City, in which he doubled down on his assertions that "many sides" were to blame for the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend when a counterprotester was killed at a white supremacist rally

Bernard was one of a few dozen leaders, reports The Washington Post, who gave advice to the president through the White House liaison office.

Trump to Skip Ceremony Celebrating Lifetime Achievements

U.S. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump will not attend an annual ceremony at Washington's Kennedy Center honoring the lifetime achievements of select artists to avoid distraction, a White House statement said Saturday.

"The president and first lady have decided not to participate in this year's activities to allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction," the White House said.

The announcement came after one of the honorees, dancer Carmen de Lavallade, said she would boycott a separate White House reception that is held in conjunction with the award ceremony.

27 Arrested in Boston After Thousands Gather for CounterprotestPolice said they arrested 27 people Saturday in a day of protests in Boston, Massachusetts, where an estimated 40,000 people gathered, a week after a march by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, resulted in three deaths.

Police Commissioner William Evans said the 27 people were arrested for charges that included assault and battery on police officers. Three people were wearing ballistic vests, and one of those was armed, the commissioner said.

Competing Protest Groups Gather in Boston as Police Call for CalmConservative free-speech advocates and left-wing counterprotesters are beginning to gather in the East Coast city of Boston for dueling rallies, and police say they will not tolerate violence from either side.

Several hundred people already have showed up at the downtown park where the rallies are to be held. Left-wing activist groups, including Black Lives Matter and Antifa, planned to protest the event, which its organizers are calling a free speech rally.

Heavy rain and flash flooding possible in portions of the Southwest this weekend

An upper-level low in the Southwest U.S. will act as a trigger for thunderstorms this weekend. The area of greatest concern is in New Mexico, southeast Utah and portions of southern Colorado.
