More New York Guardsmen Heading to Puerto Rico for Storm Recovery

Another contingent of National Guard members from New York is preparing to depart for Puerto Rico to help the U.S. territory recover from Hurricane Maria.

New York Army National Guard officials say 125 members of the Buffalo-based 152nd Engineer Co. of the 204th Engineer Battalion are now scheduled to depart Thursday morning from the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. The departure was originally scheduled for Wednesday.

The unit's heavy construction equipment has already been sent to the Caribbean island aboard a ship from New Jersey.

Weather Helping Fight Against Deadly Wildfires in Spain, Portugal

 

Rain and cooler temperatures are helping firefighters in Portugal and Spain's Galicia region battle wildfires that have killed at least 40 people.

Authorities in Portugal said Tuesday the fires there were under control, while in Spain the blazes were still threatening inhabited areas.

Portugal also began three days of mourning Tuesday.

Winds from Hurricane Ophelia fanned the wildfires that officials in both countries have said were started by arsonists.




US Attorney General: Respect for 'Rule of Law' Has Eroded

 

The top U.S. law enforcement official, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, told Congress on Wednesday there has been "an erosion in the respect for the rule of law" in the country.

Sessions contended that "too often advancing political agendas have been substituted for following the law." He attacked several large U.S. jurisdictions, referring to them as "sanctuary cities," for refusing to cooperate with federal officials in identifying immigrants illegally in the country when they have been held for possible criminal offenses.




Car Bomb Kills 5 Police, 2 Civilians in Southwest Pakistan

 

A car bomb attack struck a Pakistani police truck in the southwestern city of Quetta on Wednesday, killing at least five policemen and two civilians. In a separate attack in Quetta, a police officer was gunned down by assailants riding on a motorcycle, authorities said.

Also Wednesday, a roadside bombing near a tribal area along the border with Afghanistan killed two troops.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the car bombing, which took place in the Saryab Road area of Quetta, the provincial capital of Baluchistan.




Russian Supply Ship Docks at International Space Station An unmanned Russian cargo ship has docked successfully at the International Space Station, delivering supplies to its six-member crew.

The Progress MS-07 ship, carrying 2.5 metric tons (2.75 tons) of water, food and scientific equipment, moored at the space outpost in automatic mode Monday two days after its launch from the Russian-leased Baikonur launch complex in Kazakhstan.

Saturday's launch came after a two-day postponement and docking plan change.

Initially, the Progress cargo ship was to test a new regime for docking with the space station less than four hours after launch.




Microsoft Rolls Out New Windows 10 Update, Laptops Microsoft has begun rolling out an update to its Windows 10 operating system, hoping to spark enthusiasm for its virtual- and augmented-reality ambitions.

The Windows 10 update became available Tuesday.

Several of Microsoft's partners -- Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo -- are simultaneously launching their first "Windows Mixed Reality" headsets Tuesday. Samsung is also releasing one early next month.

Microsoft is also announcing a new generation of laptops in its Surface line.
