Deadly Heat Wave Claimed at Least 6 Lives in Parts of Southwest

A deadly heat wave that has claimed at least six lives in parts of the American Southwest continues.

While temperatures cooled off Friday in Los Angeles, residents are bracing for a long, hot summer.

Planes were grounded for a time in Phoenix earlier this week, as temperatures in parts of the U.S. Southwest soared to 45 degrees Celsius and higher, from Tucson, Arizona, to Palm Springs, California.

Colorado Officer Escorting Pence Motorcade Hurt in CrashA Colorado Springs motorcycle officer has been injured in an accident while escorting Vice President Mike Pence's motorcade to the city's airport.

Police Lt. Howard Black told The Gazette the accident happened at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Black didn't release the officer's name or details on the crash, but he said he was in serious condition.

No other vehicles were involved, and Pence's motorcade continued to the airport.

New White House Usher a Former Trump Hotel EmployeeFirst Lady Melania Trump has hired a new chief usher to oversee the White House residence staff, bringing in a high-level employee from the Trump Organization's Washington hotel to fill the slot.

Timothy Harleth served as the director of rooms at the Trump hotel, and at the White House he will oversee about 90 staff members who run operations at the facility.

"I am so pleased that Timothy will be joining our team," Trump said in a statement.

US Congressman Injured in Shooting Is Moved out of Intensive Care

U.S. Representative Steve Scalise, who was shot and seriously injured in an attack on Republican lawmakers last week, is in fair condition and was moved out of the intensive care unit earlier this week, hospital officials said Saturday.

The Louisiana lawmaker, a member of the House Republican leadership, has had "continued good progress," MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement. He was transferred out of the ICU on Thursday, the hospital added.

Red Cross App Helps RefugeesThe Red Cross launched a smartphone app Tuesday to help refugees and migrants arriving in Italy access information and services, including medical, psychological and legal support.

The digital platform called "Virtual Volunteer" was unveiled on World Refugee Day as new data showed the number of refugees globally reached a record 22.5 million in 2016.

"People moving are often caught in a fog of poor information," said Jagan Chapagain, head of programs and operations at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

Administration OKs $2 Billion Drone Sale to IndiaThe Trump administration has authorized the sale of unarmed surveillance drones to India, the manufacturer said Friday, as the two nations' leaders prepare for their first face-to-face meeting.

India initiated its request to buy 22 Guardian MQ-9B unmanned aircraft for maritime surveillance last year. The deal is estimated to be worth about $2 billion. The offer is still subject to congressional approval.
