Severe Thunderstorms With Heavy Rain Possible from the Upper Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic; Excessive Heat For Central U.S.

Storms will move from the Upper Great Lakes to the Ohio Valley/Lower Great Lakes into the northern Mid-Atlantic through the day.

Damaging winds, large hail, and flooding will be the primary threats with these storms.

Excessive heat warnings and heat advisories are in place for states in the Central Plains, the Southeast, and the Mid-Atlantic.




California Wildfire Destroys 58 Homes, Grows to 300 Square KilometersOfficials in the U.S. state of California say a wildfire sweeping through the state's foothills near Yosemite National Park has destroyed dozens of homes and burned through nearly 300 square kilometers.

Authorities said Friday that the fire has destroyed 58 homes in the Sierra Nevada foothills. They say the blaze also grew slightly bigger Friday as more than 3,800 firefighters race to control it.

Officials say 1,500 structures are still under threat from the fire.




Minneapolis Police Chief Steps Down Over Shooting

The police chief of Minneapolis, Minnesota, has resigned from her position after a 40-year-old Australian was shot to death by a police officer last week.

Police Chief Janee Harteau posted her resignation statement on the police department's Facebook page late Friday, saying, "Last Saturday's tragedy, as well as some other recent incidents, have caused me to engage in deep reflection. ... I've decided I am willing to step aside to let a fresh set of leadership eyes see what more can be done for the MPD to be the very best it can be.




US Soldier Indicted on Terrorism Charges in Hawaii A federal grand jury in Hawaii has indicted a U.S. soldier on charges of attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State group.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Ikaika Kang was indicted Friday after he was arrested by an FBI SWAT team July 8. Kang was ordered held without bail.

Because of the indictment, Kang will no longer have a preliminary hearing that was scheduled for Monday.

Kang's court-appointed attorney Birney Bervar said after his detention hearing that he will ask for a mental health evaluation.
