Huge Sea Turtles Slowly Coming Back From Brink of Extinction
Sea turtles are lumbering back from the brink of extinction, a new study says.

Scientists found more populations of the large turtles improving than declining when they looked at nearly 60 regions across the globe. That's a big change from a decade or two ago, experts said.

Long-living sea turtles have been pushed to endangered levels by hunting, accidentally being caught in fishing nets, habitat loss, plastics pollution and climate change, experts say.

Denmark Launches Global Alliance for Action on Climate Change

A U.S.-based global alliance to speed up efforts to tackle climate change was set to be launched Wednesday.

Formalized two days after the United States confirmed its plans to quit the landmark Paris climate agreement of 2015, the initiative aims to create a forum for sharing knowledge and technology among governments, businesses and community leaders.

Those joining the New York launch and supporting Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) include China, Indonesia and C40, a global network of more than 90 large cities, representing a quarter of the global economy, taking action to address climate change.

Possible Return of IS Central Asian Fighters a Cause for Concern in Region

As the Islamic State terror group is steadily losing territory in Syria and neighboring Iraq, Moscow fears that many fighters from countries in Central Asia may return home from the Mideast battlegrounds and trigger instability in the region, which could also pose a security threat to Russia.

Analysts confirmed the presence of Central Asian fighters within the ranks of the Islamic State (IS), but said Russia's concerns were overblown.

"It will be very, very hard to imagine more than a handful or two of Iraq and Syria foreign fighters that came from Central Asia ever making it back there," Thomas Lynch, a research fellow at the National Defense University in Washington, told VOA.

Scientists Remove Gene in Human Embryos to See What It Does

British scientists have used a genome editing tool known as CRISPR/Cas9 to knock out a gene in embryos just a few days old, testing the technique's ability to decipher key gene functions in early human development.

The researchers said their experiments, using a technology that is the subject of fierce international debate because of fears that it could be used to create babies to order, will deepen understanding of the biology of early human development.

In Rare Public Speech, Obama Decries Republican Healthcare Bill
Former President Barack Obama used a rare public appearance on Wednesday to question Republicans' latest effort to repeal his signature healthcare law, saying it would inflict "real human suffering" on Americans.

In his speech at a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation event in New York City, Obama also laid out an optimistic vision of the world's future while implicitly criticizing Republican President Donald Trump's "America First" philosophy.

The remarks were one of the few times that Obama, a Democrat, has spoken publicly since he left office in January.
