US Defense Chief to Visit Jordan, Turkey, Ukraine

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis will travel to Jordan, Turkey and Ukraine next week for talks with the leaders of all three nations.

Pentagon officials said Friday that Mattis aims to reaffirm Washington's commitments to each of the countries.

Mattis will begin his trip by meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah as well as top defense officials. Jordan has been a key partner in the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State terror group.




Trump Approves Plan to Create Independent Cyber CommandPresident Donald Trump has approved a long-delayed Pentagon plan to create an independent and more aggressive cyber command in order to beef up cyberwar operations against the Islamic State group and other foes.

The White House announcement Friday means U.S. Cyber Command may eventually be split off from the intelligence-focused National Security Agency.

For now, Trump has agreed to raise the stature of Cyber Command within the military and give it more autonomy.




Trump Tells Aides Bannon Is Out

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday told senior officials he has decided to dismiss his chief strategist, Steve Bannon, who from the beginning of the six-month-old tumultuous administration has been his most controversial adviser.

Bannon, who is credited with helping Trump get elected, had clashed for months with other powerful West Wing figures.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Steve Bannon had mutually agreed that Friday would be Bannon's last day.




Spanish Police Make 4th Arrest Following Terror Attacks

Catalan police have arrested a fourth man in connection with two terrorist attacks in the Barcelona region Thursday that left at least 14 people dead and dozens more injured.

Police announced the arrest on Twitter Friday, but gave no further details.

Police said they are still searching for the brother of one of the men already in police custody, but they do not know whether he was the driver of the van.

"We are looking for Moussa Oukabir, but for the moment we don't know whether he was the driver of the van," police announced.




Johnny Cash's Children 'Sickened' to See His Name on White Supremacist T-Shirt

The late American entertainer Johnny Cash was a country music legend who embraced all races and religions.

His children say they were "sickened" to see his name on the T-shirt of a white supremacist who marched through Charlottesville last Saturday.

In a message posted on social media, Cash's five children call their father "a man whose heart beat with the rhythm of love and social justice."

Humanitarian awards

They say Cash would have been "horrified at even a casual use of his name or image for an idea or a cause founded in persecution and hatred.

Scattered strong-to-severe thunderstorms are possible from the Mid-Missouri Valley into the central Plains on Friday.

Also, a few strong-to-severe storms are possible from the Mid-Atlantic into Upstate New York and western New England. Storms in these areas will also be capable of producing torrential rainfall that could lead to isolated flash flooding.




US VP Pence: US Wants Increased Trade with Latin America

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said on Thursday that Washington wants more trade and investment with Latin America, pushing back against perceptions in the region that the Trump administration has an isolationist agenda.

Speaking during a visit to the Panama Canal at the end of a Latin American tour, Pence said the United States was seeking to keep the spirit of the original North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in the pact now being renegotiated in Washington.
