Iraqi Forces Take Control of Air Base Near Kirkuk

 

The Iraqi military says its forces have taken control of a key air base north of the disputed city of Kirkuk along with an airport, an oil company and other positions in areas around the city.

The security forces retook control of the K1 air base from Kurdish fighters Monday following a call by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi for pro-government fighters to "impose security on Kirkuk."

Abadi said in a message to the nation that he had a duty to act following a Kurdish independence referendum that he described as putting Iraq "in danger of partition.




US Army Sergeant Bergdahl to Enter Plea in Desertion Case

 

U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, accused of endangering fellow soldiers who searched for him after he walked off his combat outpost in Afghanistan in
2009 and was captured by the Taliban, is scheduled to enter a plea in his case on Monday.

The Army said Bergdahl, 31, would appear in court in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he was scheduled to stand trial this month on charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, with the latter offense carrying a possible life sentence.




Las Vegas Tourism Sees Changes in Aftermath of Shooting

 

Las Vegas' tourism sector is bracing for changes in the aftermath of the massacre that killed 58 people at an outdoor music festival.

Analysts who closely track the finances of the city's casino companies say Las Vegas will see a short-term dip in visitors in response to the shooting.

Casinos and police may have to impose new security measures after gunman Stephen Paddock brought more than 20 rifles into his hotel room and drove a car filled with explosives into the parking garage.




US Green Card Lottery Applications Lost, Must be Resubmitted

 

All entries submitted to the U.S. Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, also known as the Green Card Lottery, between October 3 and 10 have been lost due to a technical glitch.

Individuals who submitted applications during these dates are directed to reapply.

"Entries submitted during October 3-10 are not valid and have been excluded from the system; they will not count as a duplicate entry," a message on the U.




Egyptian Army: Terror Plan Foiled in Sinai Peninsula

 

Egyptian security forces have foiled a militant attack on army installations in the Sinai Peninsula, a day after half a dozen policemen were killed by insurgents in the region, a military statement said.

A statement by the Egyptian army on Saturday said a group of insurgents breached a heavily-guarded army installation in the city of el-Arish in northern Sinai to carry out a "terrorist attack."

The militants, disguised in Egyptian army uniforms, were armed with grenades and firearms and carrying explosive belts - used in suicide attacks - Tamer El-Refaie, a spokesperson for the Egyptian army, said in the statement.
