Syria Pounds Rebel Areas in South, Thousands Flee to Border Zone

AMMAN (Reuters) - The Syrian army and allied forces pounded rebel-held areas of the southwest as thousands of civilians fled to safer opposition held areas along the border with Jordan and Israel, aid workers and rebels said.

They said hundreds of families with their personal belongings had arrived in the last two days in the towns of Tayba and Mataiyah, just a few kilometers from the heavily patrolled border with Jordan.




Zimbabwe's President Unhurt after 'Cowardly' Blast at Rally

HARARE (Reuters) - President Emmerson Mnangagwa escaped injury in an explosion at a political rally on Saturday, and vowed the "cowardly act" would not derail Zimbabwe's first election since the ouster of former strongman Robert Mugabe.

Mnangagwa, a former Mugabe loyalist installed after the army ousted his erstwhile patron, said the object had "exploded a few inches away from me, but it is not my time.




U.S. Open Will Factor Maternity Leave into Seedings

 

(Field Level Media) - Serena Williams was unseeded at the French Open last month due to an extended absence for the birth of her first child but she is not likely to face the same problem at the U.S. Open.

The Flushing Meadows grand slam will update its seeding policy to take into account a player returning from a pregnancy, according to United States Tennis Association president Katrina Adams.




Severe Weather and Flooding Could Hit the Northeast this Weekend

 
The continuing weather trend for severe weather striking each day continues over the weekend with a large area of the Deep South to face storms throughout Saturday afternoon.
 
In the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, the storm system which has refused to move quickly out into the Atlantic will continue to push east throughout the entire weekend; by Monday, the storm system will finally have moved out of the U.



Trump Defends Policies on Border, North Korea in Visit to Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - President Donald Trump defended his tough stance on immigrants crossing the U.S. border with Mexico on Saturday, praising his administration for a job well done and saying his approach will make the United States stronger.

Trump also said his peace initiative with North Korea was already paying off despite criticism that his Singapore summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un earlier this month was long on positive imagery but short on specific accomplishments.

Pentagon Indefinitely Suspends Some Training Exercises with South Korea

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States and South Korea have agreed to indefinitely suspend two exchange program training exercises, the Pentagon said on Friday, in the aftermath of the summit earlier this month between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
