Trump Issues New Warning to US Companies Moving Jobs Overseas

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump sternly warned American businesses again Sunday that if they move their operations overseas they would face a 35 percent tax if they then try to sell their products back in the United States.

In a series of Twitter comments, Trump said he plans to "substantially reduce" taxes and regulations on businesses. But he said that any company that "fires its employees, builds a new factory or plant" in another country "and then thinks it will sell its product back into the U.

Toll Could Reach 40 in Fire at California Warehouse Party

The Oakland, California, warehouse that had been cobbled into artist studios that went up in flames late Friday did not have a permit to be used as a living space, nor did it have a permit for entertainment.

At least nine people died in the structure known as The Ghost Ship, where a late-night electronic dance party was underway when the blaze erupted. Officials said the only way down from the second story was via a stairwell constructed entirely of wooden pallets.

Green Party Drops Bid for Statewide Pennsylvania Recount

Green Party-backed voters dropped a court case Saturday night that had sought to force a statewide recount of Pennsylvania's Nov. 8 presidential election, won by Republican Donald Trump, in what Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein had framed as an effort to explore whether voting machines and systems had been hacked and the election result manipulated.

The decision came two days before a court hearing was scheduled in the case.

US Veterans Build Barracks for Pipeline Protesters in Frigid Weather

U.S. military veterans were building barracks Friday at a protest camp in North Dakota to support thousands of activists who have squared off against authorities in frigid conditions to oppose a multibillion-dollar pipeline project near a Native American reservation.

Veterans volunteering to be human shields have been arriving at the Oceti Sakowin camp near Cannon Ball, where they will work with protesters who have spent months demonstrating against plans to route the Dakota Access Pipeline beneath a lake near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, organizers said.
