U.S. Warships Sail Near South China Sea Islands Claimed by Beijing

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two U.S. Navy warships sailed near South China Sea islands claimed by China on Sunday, two U.S. officials told Reuters, in a move that drew condemnation from Beijing as President Donald Trump seeks its continued cooperation on North Korea.

The operation was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters.

North and South Korean Leaders Meet to Discuss U.S. Options

The second meeting between North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-In was conducted in secrecy and without the usual protocol of notifying journalists and the public.
 
According to statements made by the South Korean state news agency, a message from United States President Donald Trump was discussed.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Surprised Singaporeans pursued North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sunday before realizing the portly man with slick black hair near the Marina Bay Sands hotel was an impersonator.

"It looked like the real Kim Jong Un, but later I realized it's not the real one," said Sagar Admuthe who was visiting from Mumbai, India, after several selfies with the doppleganger against a backdrop of the city's bay.




Storm Alberto Closes in on Florida, Alabama and Mississippi

(Reuters) - Gulf Coast residents should "take this storm seriously", the National Weather Service said early on Sunday, as Subtropical Storm Alberto drove north, threatening heavy rains and winds to the southern coastal states.

Florida, Alabama and Mississippi declared states of emergency on Saturday as the storm threatened up to 12 inches of rain over the Memorial Day weekend, as well as tidal surges and damaging winds, according to Patrick Burke of the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.




Israeli Army Kills 2 Militants in Gaza Border Shelling

 

GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli tank shelling killed two members of the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad and wounded a third in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, medical officials said, after weeks of border protests that have drawn lethal army fire.

Israel's military confirmed that it targeted an observation post, calling the attack retaliation for a bomb that had been placed next to the border fence overnight.




South Korea Says North Korea Committed to 'Complete' Denuclearisation, Summit with Trump

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his commitment to "complete" denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and to a planned meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Sunday.

In Washington, Trump signaled that preparations for the summit with Kim were going ahead.
