KABUL (Reuters) - The Taliban announced the start of its annual spring offensive on Wednesday, dismissing an offer for peace talks by President Ashraf Ghani and saying it will focus on U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

The announcement of the Al Khandaq campaign, named after the so-called Battle of the Trench, fought by the Prophet Mohammad to defend the city of Medina in the early days of Islam, marks the symbolic start of the fighting season.

(Reuters) - An elderly ex-policeman has been arrested and charged with four murders attributed to the Golden State Killer, a serial criminal responsible for dozens of rapes and slayings that terrorized parts of California during the 1970s and 1980s, authorities said on Wednesday.

The rain and storms which have been working their way across the Deep South over the last couple of days will make their way to the Southeast on Thursday with temperatures remaining above-average for much of the day for most of the nation.
