Gun Control Debate in the U.S. Now Centers on Teachers

Nearly 700,000 schoolteachers in the United States could keep guns in the classroom and receive an incentive bonus for doing so. Such was the proposal made by President Donald Trump in the wake of a terrible shooting at a high school in Florida. Trump has been very busy meeting with survivors and relatives of the victims; he has conducted listening sessions and considered various ideas related to gun control.



Trump Administration Considering Rise in Gas Tax

 

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration is considering a hike in the gasoline tax, but no decision has been made, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said on Friday.

"We haven't had an increase in the gas tax in a long time. It's one of the things that we're looking at," Mnuchin said in response to a question about a possible 25 cent hike in the tax.

Texas Commutes Death Sentence, Florida Executes Murderer

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Texas Governor Greg Abbott commuted the death sentence of a convicted murderer less than an hour before he was set to be executed on Thursday after the death row inmate's family begged for mercy and won a rare clemency recommendation.

Florida executed a man convicted of the 1993 rape and murder of a college student, the state's Department of Corrections said, while Alabama planned to execute a convicted murderer later on Thursday.

South Korea Says Approved Visit by Sanctioned North Korean to Pursue Peace

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea said it approved the Winter Olympic visit by a sanctioned North Korean official, blamed for the deadly 2010 sinking of a South Korean navy ship, in the pursuit of peace and asked for public understanding.

Kim Yong Chol, vice-chairman of the North's ruling Workers' Party's Central Committee, will lead a high-level delegation at the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang on Sunday.
