US Congressman Injured in Shooting Is Moved out of Intensive Care

U.S. Representative Steve Scalise, who was shot and seriously injured in an attack on Republican lawmakers last week, is in fair condition and was moved out of the intensive care unit earlier this week, hospital officials said Saturday.

The Louisiana lawmaker, a member of the House Republican leadership, has had "continued good progress," MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement. He was transferred out of the ICU on Thursday, the hospital added.

Red Cross App Helps RefugeesThe Red Cross launched a smartphone app Tuesday to help refugees and migrants arriving in Italy access information and services, including medical, psychological and legal support.

The digital platform called "Virtual Volunteer" was unveiled on World Refugee Day as new data showed the number of refugees globally reached a record 22.5 million in 2016.

"People moving are often caught in a fog of poor information," said Jagan Chapagain, head of programs and operations at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

US Narrows Focus of Grants to Fight Extremism at Home

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Friday announced changes to a $10 million government grant program, narrowing its focus around efforts to combat Islamist extremism.

In an update to awards announced in January by former President Barack Obama's administration, the department released a new list of grant recipients and amounts, shifting money to law enforcement offices and away from groups that combat U.S.-based extremism.

Reuters reported in February that President Donald Trump's administration wanted to revamp the program to focus solely on Islamist extremism.

New Girl Scout Badges Focus on Cybercrime, Not Cookie Sales

Cookie sales may take a back seat to fighting identity theft and other computer crime now that Girl Scouts as young as 5 are to be offered the chance to earn their first-ever cyber security badges.

Armed with a needle and thread, U.S. Girl Scouts who master the required skills can attach to their uniform's sash the first of 18 cyber security badges that will be rolled out in September 2018, Girl Scouts of the USA said in a press release.

Study: Olive Oil Protects Brain From Alzheimer's

The benefits of a Mediterranean diet are widely chronicled, but new research shows extra-virgin olive oil, a key part of the diet, may protect "against cognitive decline."

Specifically, researchers at Temple University in Philadelphia say extra-virgin olive oil "protects memory and learning ability and reduces the formation of amyloid-beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain - classic markers of Alzheimer's disease."

Researcher say olive oil reduced inflammation and triggers a process called autophagy, which helps broken down cells to flush intracellular debris and toxins.

US Mayors: Look to Us, Not Washington, for Results

Think Washington, D.C., and your statehouse are irredeemable and unproductive? Look to city hall for answers. That's the message from the nation's mayors six months in to Donald Trump's presidency.

"We don't have time to argue about ideological positions. We have to find real solutions for problems," said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, who will take over this weekend as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors as it convenes in Miami Beach, Florida.
