Firefighters Shifting Into Recovery Phase in Northern California

The fires in Northern California improved this week, with fire officials saying they have the upper hand on the widespread blazes.

But for firefighters, there is still the daily work of containing the fire and shifting into recovery and clean up. For Ryan Estes, the fight against the widespread, complex fire in Northern California is personal. Estes has worked as a firefighter outside of Santa Rosa, California since 2000.

"This is home and we've been here since day one," said Ryan Estes, captain of the Rincon Valley Fire Department.

Urban Farms Provide Fresh Produce for City Residents

New York City is known for its tall buildings, financial markets and centers for the arts, but America's most populated city is becoming known for something you might not expect -- farms.

New York City's government announced last month that it is providing $500,000 to create two urban farms. Both will use space in New York public housing developments. The new farms will join four other farms already operating with city government help.

Cybersecurity Firm: North Korea Likely Behind Taiwan SWIFT Cyber Heist

Cybersecurity firm BAE Systems Plc said on Monday it believes the North Korean Lazarus hacking group is likely responsible for a recent cyber heist in Taiwan, the latest in a string of hacks targeting the global SWIFT messaging system.

"The likely culprit is Lazarus," BAE cyber-intelligence chief Adrian Nish told Reuters by telephone.

The British firm has previously linked Lazarus to last year's $81 million cyber heist at Bangladesh's central bank, as have other cyber firms including Russia's Kaspersky Lab and California-based Symantec Corp.

McCain Condemns 'Half-Baked' Nationalism in Liberty Medal Acceptance Speech

U.S. Sen. John McCain jabbed Monday night at unnamed pushers of isolationist politics, saying at his National Constitution Center Liberty Medal ceremony in Philadelphia that abandoning America's role as an international leader is "unpatriotic."

The six-term Republican senator from Arizona made the remarks after receiving the award for a lifetime of service and sacrifice to the country.

In addition to recalling his more than two decades of Navy service and his imprisonment in a Vietnam prisoner of war camp, McCain took a moment to go a step further than the night's other speakers, who lamented what many described as a fractured political climate.
