Melania Trump to UN: 'Step Up' to Protect Children
First lady Melania Trump is calling on world leaders to "step up" to improve the lives of children.
She will deliver the remarks Wednesday during a luncheon at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York. The White House says the audience will include spouses of world leaders, among others.
In prepared remarks, Trump says that children are often "hit first and hardest in any country" when it comes to drug addiction, bullying, poverty, disease, trafficking illiteracy and hunger.
Will Kurdish Vote Trigger Yet Another War in Iraq?
It is rare for the United States and Iran to agree on anything but this week both Washington and Tehran have been scrambling to try to dissuade the president of Iraqi Kurdistan, Masoud Barzani, from holding a referendum on independence.
Their vehement opposition to an independence vote partly stems from their concerns about each other.
Tehran worries that an independent Iraqi Kurdistan will cleave ever closer to America and the West, while Washington is anxious that the referendum will trigger war between Iraq's Shi'ite militias and the Kurds, a conflict that would likely end up splintering Iraq, which the United States has spent considerable effort trying to bolster, and distract from the U.
Nations to Sign Nuclear Ban Treaty Opposed by Big Powers
The first treaty to ban nuclear weapons was opened Wednesday for countries to sign, with the backing of over 100 nations but the opposition of nuclear-armed ones.
"This treaty is an important milestone towards the universally held goal of a world free of nuclear weapons'' at a time of increasing concern about their risk, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said as he opened a signing ceremony.

Hurricane Maria Pounds Eastern Puerto Rico
Hurricane Maria is pounding eastern Puerto Rico after making landfall Wednesday as a powerful Category 4 storm that forecasters described as "extremely dangerous."
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Maria, one of the most powerful storms ever to hit Puerto Rico, had maximum sustained winds of about 240 kilometers per hour Wednesday morning, and that heavy rain would cause life-threatening flash floods and landslides.
