U.S. defense chief opposes deploying troops to quell protests, despite Trump threats

WASHINGTON - U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said on Wednesday he does not support invoking the Insurrection Act to deploy active-duty forces to quell civil unrest for now, despite President Donald Trump's threats to militarize America's response to mass protests.

Trump said this week he could use military forces in states that fail to crack down on sometimes violent protests over the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis.

Brazil sets another record for daily coronavirus deaths

RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazil registered another record number of novel coronavirus deaths over the last 24 hours, the health ministry said on Tuesday evening, as the pandemic in Latin America's largest country shows no signs of slowing down.

The nation registered 28,936 additional cases of the novel coronavirus, the ministry said, and 1,262 deaths. There are now 555,383 total confirmed coronavirus cases in Brazil and 31,199 coronavirus deaths.

The fresh record comes as some Brazilian leaders, including right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, continue to belittle the virus, warning that the economic fallout from quarantine measures will be worse than the virus itself.

Biden vows to heal racial wounds, rips Trump as divisive: 'Is this who we want to be?'

PHILADELPHIA - Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Tuesday blasted President Donald Trump's response to U.S. protests over racism and police misconduct, vowing to try to heal the country's racial divide and not "fan the flames of hate."

Speaking in Philadelphia - a city rocked by sometimes violent demonstrations in recent days - the former vice president sought to draw a vivid contrast between himself and Trump, whom he will face in the Nov.

Trump says Republican convention will not be held in North Carolina

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump said on Tuesday the Republican National Convention set for August in North Carolina would have to be held in another state because of social-distancing restrictions ordered by the state's Democratic governor.

Trump made the announcement on Twitter hours after Governor Roy Cooper rejected Republican demands for a full-fledged presidential nominating convention in Charlotte, telling organizers that planning for a scaled-down event was "a necessity" due to the coronavirus.

Facebook takes down white nationalist and fake antifa accounts

SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook Inc said Tuesday it has suspended accounts associated with white nationalist groups after some advocated bringing weapons to the current wave of anti-racist protests.

Company officials also said they removed accounts falsely claiming allegiance to antifa in order to bring discredit to the anti-fascist movement.

Antifa adherents have said they focus on defending people from attacks by authorities or vigilantes, but they have been vilified by President Donald Trump who, without citing evidence, said they were instigators of anti-police violence.

Powerful winds linger across the northern states

Wednesday will see the development of an area of severe weather moving across the Northern States that will bring strong winds from the Northern Plains to the Ohio Valley.

A few more areas of showers and storms will develop throughout the U.S. with pop-up afternoon storms possible in the Northeast, along the Gulf Coast, and on into the state of Florida.

Hackers and hucksters reinvigorate 'Anonymous' brand amid protests

SAN FRANCISCO - The amorphous internet activist movement known as Anonymous staged an online resurgence in the past week on the back of real-world protests against police brutality.

Born from internet chat boards more than a dozen years ago, the collective was once known for organizing low-skill but effective denial-of-service attacks that temporarily shut down access to payment processors that had stopped handling donations to the anti-secrecy site WikiLeaks.
