Israel Begins to Demolish Homes on Jerusalem Outskirts, Stoking Palestinian Fears

SUR BAHER, West Bank (Reuters) - Israeli forces began demolishing buildings near a military barrier on the outskirts of Jerusalem on Monday, in the face of Palestinian protests and international criticism.

Bulldozers accompanied by hundreds of Israeli soldiers and police moved in to Sur Baher, a Palestinian village on the edge of East Jerusalem in an area that Israel captured and occupied in the 1967 Middle East War.

Puerto Rico Governor Refuses to Resign as Island Braces for Big Protest

(Reuters) - Puerto Rico's governor on Sunday said he would not seek re-election next year but refused to resign as the island braced for more protests by demonstrators demanding he step down over offensive chat messages.

A day before a planned general strike and massive street demonstrations in the bankrupt U.S. territory, Ricardo Rossello, 40, said he respected the wishes of Puerto Ricans and would not seek a second term in November 2020 elections.

Severe Weather Hits the Mid-Atlantic

The chances of damaging weather will be art their highest in the eastern half of the nation with storms moving across a region from the Gulf Coast to the Midwest and on into the Atlantic Coast.
The stormy weather could become severe in a region of the Mid-Atlantic extending from Kentucky and Tennessee to the coastal portions of North Carolina, Virginia, New York, and Massachusetts.

New Zealand Plans Firearm Register, Tighter Licensing Amid Gun Law Reforms

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand on Monday said it aims to establish a national register for firearms, tighten licensing rules and ban visitors from buying guns, in a second set of reforms introduced in response to a mass shooting in March.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern banned military-style semi-automatic (MSSA) and assault rifles in the first phase of reforms introduced days after a lone gunman attacked worshippers at two mosques in the city of Christchurch on March 15, killing 51 people.

Triad Gangster Attack in Hong Kong after Night of Violent Protests

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong police on Monday defended their actions and the lack of arrests after opposition lawmakers said police had failed to protect a train full of anti-government protesters from a triad gangster attack on Sunday.

The attack came in a night of violence that opened new fronts in Hong Kong's widening political crisis over an extradition bill to send people to China for trial.

Another Oil Transport Ship Seized Near Iran

After the Stena Impero, a British oil tanker operated by a crew of 32, was seized by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran, another oil transport vessel crossing the Strait of Hormuz was boarded by maritime forces.
The captain of the Mesdar, an oil tanker from Liberia, reported that the vessel was briefly detained before the guards allowed the ship to continue its transit.

As U.S. Heat Wave Breaks Records, Cooling Centers Offer Relief

NEW YORK (Reuters) - With a record-breaking heat wave intensifying over much of the U.S. Midwest and East Coast through the weekend, it was a bad time for Annie McQueen's air conditioner to break down in her New York City apartment.

Cities across the affected regions have opened public cooling centers, and after a sticky night in which the combined forces of a ceiling fan and a floor fan in her bedroom offered little relief, McQueen, 76, headed to one of them on Sunday at a senior center in downtown Brooklyn.
