U.S. Leadership Questioned Around the World as Rioting Continues

The President of the United States spent most of the weekend holed up in a security bunker originally designed to withstand nuclear weapons attacks; this security measure was taken as protesters amassed outside of the White House on Friday and only left when a strict curfew was imposed on Sunday. Violent protests against police brutality raged across the nation even as civic leaders called for rioting to stop.

Republican congressman Steve King fights for political life in Iowa primary

WASHINGTON - Firebrand U.S. congressman Steve King, who was called out by his colleagues last year for using hateful and intolerant rhetoric, is fighting for his political life in an Iowa primary where four Republicans are trying to take his seat.

Voters in his district have returned King to Congress before despite his incendiary comments, often directed against immigrants. Tuesday's vote comes at a particularly charged moment in U.S. history as major cities have seen widespread protests over Minneapolis police killing George Floyd last week.

Eight U.S. states cast ballots on biggest voting day since coronavirus pandemic

WASHINGTON - Eight states and the District of Columbia are holding primary elections on Tuesday, the biggest test yet of officials' readiness to manage a surge of mail ballots and the safety risks of in-person voting during the coronavirus outbreak.

The largest day of balloting since the pandemic began will serve as a dry run for the Nov. 3 general election, offering a glimpse of the challenges ahead on a national scale if that vote is conducted under a lingering threat from COVID-19.

Where U.S. coronavirus cases are on the rise

Several southern U.S. states reported sharp increases in COVID-19 infections, with Alabama, South Carolina and Virginia all seeing new cases rise 35% or more in the week ended May 31 compared with the prior week, according to a Reuters analysis.

South Carolina health officials said they expected more increases in the future due to a lack of social distancing and mask wearing at protests triggered by the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minnesota.

Former U.S. President Obama condemns violence at protests

WASHINGTON - Former U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday condemned the use of violence at nationwide protests over racial inequities and excessive police force, while praising the actions of peaceful protesters seeking change.

The vast majority of protesters have been peaceful, but a "small minority" were putting people at risk and harming the very communities the protests are intended to help, Obama wrote in an online essay posted on Medium.

Protests elevate Bottoms and Demings as possible Biden running matesAtlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and U.S. Representative Val Demings of Florida have risen in prominence amid protests against police brutality as Joe Biden weighs whether to choose a black woman as his Democratic running mate for November's presidential election.

Activists say such a pick would excite disenchanted African-American voters and demonstrate to a crucial part of the Democratic base that Biden is committed to criminal justice reform following the death of George Floyd, who was black, in Minneapolis last week at the hands of a white police officer.

Gilead's remdesivir shows modest improvement in moderate COVID-19 patientsGilead Sciences Inc on Monday reported that its antiviral drug remdesivir provided a modest benefit in patients with moderate COVID-19 given a five-day course of the treatment, while those who received the medicine for 10 days in the study did not fare as well.

Gilead shares fell about 4%.

Remdesivir, which is administered intravenously in hospital, is the first drug to show improvement in COVID-19 patients in formal clinical trials, and new information about its efficacy is being closely watched around the world, as nations battle the pandemic.
