House Democrats Unveil More 'Realistic' Climate Change Plan

By Timothy Gardner

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A group of U.S. House Democrats on Tuesday unveiled a climate change plan they said featured a "more realistic" goal to cut carbon emissions to net zero by 2050 rather than by 2030 as envisioned under the Green New Deal introduced early this year.

Solar and wind companies have criticized the Green New Deal, introduced by Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Edward Markey in February, as unrealistic and politically divisive.

Senate to Vote to Confirm FAA Nominee Wednesday

By David Shepardson

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate is set to vote on Wednesday to confirm a former airline executive to head the Federal Aviation Administration.

Safety concerns are an issue at the FAA, which is grappling with a review of Boeing Co's grounded 737 MAX in the wake of two crashes that killed 346 in October and March, as well as broader questions about how it certifies aircraft and whether it delegates too much authority to manufacturers.

Trump Sues to Block House Panel from Getting His State Tax Returns

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Tuesday sued to block a U.S. House of Representatives committee from obtaining his New York state tax returns, with his lawyer accusing the Democratic-controlled panel of "presidential harassment."

In a filing in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Trump's lawyers argued that a law passed by New York state earlier this month that would give the House Ways and Means Committee access to the president's state tax returns violates his constitutional rights.

By Hamid Shalizi

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan called on Tuesday for an explanation of comments by U.S. President Donald Trump in which he said he could win the Afghan war in just 10 days by wiping out Afghanistan but did not want to kill 10 million people.

Trump's remarks followed a meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan at the White House on Monday at which Trump voiced optimism that Pakistan could help broker a political settlement to end the nearly 18-year-old war in Afghanistan.

Britain's New Leader Johnson Vows to Get Brexit Done

By Guy Faulconbridge and Elizabeth Piper

LONDON (Reuters) - Boris Johnson, the Brexiteer who has promised to lead Britain out of the European Union with or without a deal by the end of October, will replace Theresa May as prime minister after winning the leadership of the Conservative Party on Tuesday.

His convincing victory catapults the United Kingdom towards a showdown with the EU and towards a constitutional crisis at home, as British lawmakers have vowed to bring down any government that tries to leave the bloc without a divorce deal.
