Fed's Harker Sees 2 U.S. Rate Hikes this Year

 

(Reuters) - Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank President Patrick Harker on Wednesday said he still thinks just two interest-rate hikes this year is "likely appropriate," but signaled he is open to more if needed.

"Based on the relatively strong economy, but the continued stubbornness of inflation, I've penciled in two hikes for 2018," Harker said in remarks prepared for delivery at Saint Louis University in St.

(Reuters) - U.S. evangelist Billy Graham, who counseled presidents and preached to millions across the world from his native North Carolina to communist North Korea during his 70 years on the pulpit, died on Wednesday at the age of 99, a spokesman said.




2 Dead, 22 Hurt from Bomb Blast in Northeast Myanmar City Lashio

YANGON (Reuters) - A bomb blast killed two bank employees and injured 22 other people in Myanmar's northeastern city of Lashio on Wednesday, the government and the military said.

Police said an investigation was under way but would not elaborate on whether there were any suspects in the attack.




Turkey Warns Syrian Forces Entering Afrin Face Serious Consequences

 

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey warned on Wednesday that pro-Syrian government forces entering the northwest Afrin region to support a Kurdish militia there will face "serious consequences" and they will be regarded as legitimate targets.

A convoy of some 40-50 vehicles carrying pro-government forces tried to enter Syria's Afrin on Tuesday, but retreated after artillery fire by Turkish forces, President Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman said.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York civil rights group on Tuesday sued Trump administration officials over what it called prolonged detention of immigrant children, blaming recent shifts in U.S. government policy for keeping children locked up without cause.




Democrat Picks Up Seat in Special Election for Kentucky Legislature

 

(Reuters) - A Democrat easily won a Kentucky House of Representatives special election on Tuesday, the 37th U.S. legislative seat flipped to the party from Republicans since Donald Trump's 2016 election as president, the Democratic National Committee said.

Linda Belcher won by more than a 2-1 margin over Republican Rebecca Johnson, the widow of a Republican whose death in December led to the election.
