Turkish Parliament OKs Army's Cross-border Operations in Iraq, Syria
Turkey's main opposition united with the government Saturday to overwhelmingly pass a motion giving its military a mandate to carry out operations in neighboring Iraq and Syria.

The parliament met in an emergency session two days ahead of an independence referendum by Iraqi Kurds. Addressing parliament, Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli warned that the Kurdish referendum would bring very dangerous consequences, perhaps even clashes even in global terms.

U.S.-backed Syrian fighters captured Saturday the country's largest gas field from the so-called Islamic State group in an eastern province that borders Iraq as they race with government forces to capture the energy-rich region, a senior official with the group said.

U.S. President Donald Trump has touted Senator Luther Strange's commitment to family values and the Republican agenda in a campaign rally late Friday in the southern state of Alabama.

"He is going to be great. He's tough on crime, he's tough on borders," Trump said. He said Strange will protect the 2nd Amendment, the one giving Americans the right to bear arms.

Trump Clashes With Sports World Over Player Protests
President Donald Trump and the sports world engaged in an intensifying spat on Saturday after he called for National Football League owners to fire players who protest during the U.S. national anthem and disinvited a National Basketball Association star from a White House visit.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Saturday that Trump's statements revealed an "unfortunate lack of respect" for the NFL and its players.

Goodell's statement was released a day after Trump suggested any protesting football player should lose his job.

US Officials: New Travel Restrictions May Be on Horizon

The top homeland security official in the United States has suggested to President Donald Trump new standards for visitors and immigrants applying to enter the country.

With less than two full days before temporary restrictions on travelers from six Muslim-majority countries are set to expire Sunday, the president has not yet announced his decision on this new broader policy, which was the result of a mandate by Trump to review other nations' standards for the so-called "vetting" process.

New 6.1-magnitude Earthquake Shakes Jittery Mexico

A strong new earthquake shook Mexico on Saturday, causing new alarm in a country reeling from two yet-more-powerful quakes this month that have killed nearly 400 people.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the new, magnitude 6.1 temblor was centered about 11 miles (18 kilometers) south-southeast of Matias Romero in the state of Oaxaca, which was the region most battered by a magnitude 8.1 quake on Sept. 7.

It was among thousands of aftershocks recorded in the wake of that earlier quake, the most powerful to hit Mexico in 32 years, which killed at least 90 people.
