Health Officials Warn About Spread of COVID-19 Misinformation
Representatives from the World Health Organization have issued a warning about false information circulating on social networks about the coronavirus pandemic.
One recent instance involved a graphic featuring a bar chart that compares the daily death rate of COVID-19 with other infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, influenza, hepatitis, malaria, and others; the graphic cited the United States Centers for Disease Control and the medical journal The Lancet as information sources, but it incorrectly stated deaths from coronavirus at just 56 per day.
Since the first serious outbreak in China, which was reported in late 2019, COVID-19 has been cited as the cause of an average 3,509 deaths per day around the world. Fact-checking teams at Facebook and Twitter have flagged the graphic, which includes a comment insinuating that the pandemic has been fabricated, as dangerous misinformation that could encourage individuals to stop taking preventive measures such as social distances and wearing masks.
Manhunt Underway After Mass Stabbing Attack in England
A man armed with a knife stabbed seven people during a two-hour spree in the center of Birmingham on Monday; one victim died and two are hospitalized with serious injuries.
As of Monday night, detectives looking for the suspect could not establish a motive for the attack, but they did not think it may have related to terrorism or a criminal gang dispute.
Even though the attacks took place in a Chinese ethnic enclave and a gay nightlife district, detectives are not convinced that this may have been a hate crime.
Rapper Cardi B Slams Conservative Pundit Over Political Issues
After sitting down with former Vice President Joe Biden for an interview, rapper Cardi B has been the center of criticism over her political views and her raunchy songs, which often celebrate female sexual empowerment in an almost pornographic manner.
Political commentator Candace Owens recently posted a Twitter update accusing Cardi B of disintegrating the values of the African-American community with her music.
The rapper responded to Owens on Twitter with the kind of venomous language her fans expect; she stated that Owens is being used by political supporters of United States President Donald Trump, and she also noted that Owens was sidelined at the recent Republican National Convention, where she was expected to be a speaker but was replaced at the last minute with the Governor of Kentucky.
"The Blues Brothers" Makes the List of Movies Recommended by the Vatican
The 1980 action comedy and musical "The Blues Brothers" has made this year's list of Roman Catholic classic films recommended by the Vatican. Directed by John Landis, the movie is not very religious; it centers on a pair of blues musicians who grew up in a Catholic orphanage and who feel that God has given them a mission to pay an overdue property tax bill so that the orphanage can continue to operate.
The film is famous not only for the performances of Dan Akroyd and the late John Belushi but also for its collection of cameos by legendary musicians and dangerously over-the-top car chases through the streets of Chicago.
Other films the Vatican recommends include "The Passion of the Christ" and ?It's a Wonderful Life."
