Oil Rig Explodes in Gulf of Mexico

The U.S. Coast Guard says the explosion occurred early Thursday, about 145 kilometers south of Vermilion Bay, along the coast of the southern state of Louisiana. The explosion set the production platform on fire, and it is reportedly still burning.

The Coast Guard says all 13 crew members reported to be aboard the platform have been accounted for, with one injured. Helicopters and boats were deployed to rescue the crew members, who were thrown into the water. One Coast Guard helicopter is said to be currently on the scene.

Officials say it is not yet known whether the explosion has caused an oil leak, though there are reports the rig was not actively producing any product. The oil platform is owned by Houston,Texas-based oil company Mariner Energy.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the government has response assets ready to be deployed if there are reports of pollution in the water. Gibbs said President Barack Obama was in a meeting, and that he is not sure if the president has been notified.

The explosion comes about four-and-a-half months after an oil rig leased by oil giant BP exploded in the Gulf, killing 11 people and sparking the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
