Immunology Research Suggests SARS-CoV-2 Could Be Replacing Influenza Strains

As cases of COVID-19 continue to be diagnosed during the pandemic, medical centers around the world have noticed a sharp decrease in patients infected with the flu. Australian microbiologists and immunologists from the University of Melbourne have evaluated the behavior and incidence of influenza cases during the pandemic, and they believe that the novel coronavirus might be responsible for the ongoing near extinction of the influenza B strains.

Philippines to receive 300,000 courses of Merck's COVID-19 pill

The Philippines will receive 300,000 courses of Merck & Co's COVID-19 antiviral drug next month, licensed importers and distributors said on Wednesday, as Asian nations race to get early access to the experimental pill amid large demand.

Singapore and Malaysia have signed deals to buy the drug, Molnupiravir, while Indonesia is finalising a purchase agreement, among a slew of orders after data from interim clinical trials showed the pills could halve the likelihood of hospitalisation or death for patients at risk of severe COVID-19.

Fed faces showdown as supply, demand and 'patience' collide

Federal Reserve officials face a ticking clock in their ability to ignore high inflation and are now navigating between their own senses of patience and risk, and a U.S. economy stymied by tangled supply chains, slow hiring and strong consumer demand.

The combination of supply bottlenecks and a surge in household incomes fueled by pandemic-related government aid pushed the personal consumption expenditures price index, a key measure of inflation, to a 30-year high on a year-on-year basis in August.

Harvard's modern-day Darwin warns against humanity's downward slope

The Harvard University scientist who has called for setting aside half the planet as a nature preserve says the slope of human history will always be downward unless there is global cooperation to save existing species.

Edward O. Wilson, a 92-year old naturalist hailed as the Darwin of the 21st century, said humankind is not too polarized to save the planet, even as some of the world's biggest polluters drag their feet on cutting carbon emissions and arresting global warming.

Taliban are eager for dialogue with the world, Chinese minister says

The Taliban are eager to have dialogue with the rest of the world, and the international community should help Afghanistan with its development, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday.

In an address delivered by video link to a conference in Iran, Wang said Beijing was ready to host further talks between Afghanistan and its neighbours on the country's future.

Storms and rain continue in the center of the U.S.

The severe weather and storms moving through the Plains on Tuesday will slide to the east on Wednesday. The power of the severe weather will make its way to the Gulf Coast as cool air moves into the Plains. Rain will be heavy and spread from the Canadian border through the Central Plains into Texas and Louisiana.

More wintry showers will move into the Pacific Northwest Coast and bring snow flurries to the Northern Rockies. Temperatures are rising again in California and the Southwest, with the 70s expected in the Southeast.

Airlines brace for early 'long lines' when U.S. lifts travel restrictions

Delta Air Lines Chief Executive Ed Bastian said on Tuesday that travelers should be prepared for initial long lines when the United States lifts international travel restrictions for fully vaccinated travelers on Nov. 8.

"It's going to be a bit sloppy at first. I can assure you, there will be lines unfortunately ... but we'll get it sorted out," Bastian said at a U.S. travel event.

"We're going to have a good surge of demand but in order to keep that surge up we're going to need to make it easier and easier for people to figure out what the documentation requirements are.
