U.S. House Republicans expected to oust Trump critic Cheney despite risk of deepening divisions

Top U.S. Republicans on Sunday sought to portray their expected ouster of Representative Liz Cheney as an act of unity, despite warnings that the move could deepen divisions over former President Donald Trump and sink party hopes in the 2022 elections.

In the strongest sign yet that Cheney faces defeat in a party vote expected on Wednesday, the top Republican in the House of Representatives said he would back congresswoman Elise Stefanik to replace the Wyoming Republican as chair of the 212-member House Republican Conference.




The week starts with more severe weather

The latest round of severe weather to move into the Deep South will be located close to the Gulf Coast. Along the coast, warm air is moving north from the Gulf of Mexico and will clash with cold air moving south from the Plains.
 
The most dangerous issue facing the Deep South and the Southeast on Monday will be the heavy rain lasting until Tuesday.

Bellisio Foods, Inc., a Jackson, Ohio establishment, is recalling approximately 3,927 pounds of not-ready-to-eat (NRTE) spaghetti with meat sauce product due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The product contains soy, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label.




Horse racing-Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit fails drug test

Trainer Bob Baffert, who won a record-setting seventh Kentucky Derby with Medina Spirit this month, on Sunday said the dark bay colt had failed a drug test.

Baffert said a post-race sample provided by Medina Spirit had tested positive for 21 picograms of the anti-inflammatory drug betamethasone, over the legal limit in Kentucky racing.

Medina Spirit, ridden by jockey John Velazquez, had secured a half-length victory over Mandaloun in the 19-horse Kentucky Derby on May 1.
