Health Benefits of Being Outdoors
A collection of data that involved over 290 million people has confirmed something that people have been saying for years.
 
Being outside in nature can have a number of health benefits. A team of researchers at the University of East Anglia examined data from all over the world.

The report showed that being out in a green space can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, preterm birth and premature death. Any green space can benefit a person's health including urban parks. Caoimhe Twohig-Bennet was the lead author of the study.

She stated that people have known for a long time being in nature can improve health. However, the long-term effects of it have not been studied until now. She also stated that being near a green space can lower cortisol level. Cortisol is a marker of stress.

Researchers do not know exactly how being in nature improves health. However, they have found that being in nature can do the following for a person.

Being in a green space gives people more opportunity to socialize

Being in a green space gives people more opportunity to engage in physical activity

Being in a green space can expose a person to healthy bacteria



Caiomhe stated that she hopes that the results of the study will encourage more people to spend more time outside. She also stated that she hopes this will encourage people to start building more parks. Street trees can also benefit people's health.

Caiomhe stated that people will turn to medication to treat different types of ailments. However, nature may be able to heal people. She believes that people should start spending more time in nature in order to benefit their health.

The average person spends about 5 percent of their day outside. There are many things that you can do to increase the amount of time that you spend outside.

Work or study outdoors- You can take your computer to a green space.

Go outside when you take a break-You can go outside during a break instead of watching TV or surfing the internet.

Go on a retreat-Spending a few days in a natural setting can help you take your mind off of the stresses off of life.

Develop an outdoor hobby- You can garden, golf, canoe or cook outdoors.
