Health Warning: Whole Foods and Trader Joe's Products Among Foods Linked to Salmonella Concern

Consumers are being warned about a number of prepared foods sold at major grocery retailers after products containing jalape?were pulled from stores over a potential Salmonella contamination risk.

The warnings involve products sold at Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's, Target, Walmart, Kroger, Hannaford and Stop & Shop, among other retailers. The products include salsa, guacamole, pico de gallo, dips, sandwiches and other prepared foods containing jalape?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to fresh jalape?supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors. The FDA says a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, that supplied the distributor has been identified as a potential source.

Whole Foods Market Products

Whole Foods Market recalled select products from its Produce and Prepared Foods departments. The affected products were sold online and in stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky and Ohio.

Whole Foods says customers who purchased affected products should not consume them and should discard them or return them with a valid receipt for a refund.

Taylor Fresh Foods also recalled products containing the affected jalape?that were distributed through multiple retailers, including Trader Joe's.

What Consumers Should Do

If you purchased any of the products listed above, do not eat them. Check the product name, UPC and date against the FDA's official recall information.

Consumers should not taste a product to determine whether it is safe. A contaminated food can look, smell and taste normal.

Anyone who has already eaten an affected product should monitor for symptoms of Salmonella infection.

Salmonella Symptoms

Salmonella commonly causes:

Diarrhea, which may sometimes be bloody
Fever
Stomach cramps
Nausea
Vomiting

Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of developing serious illness. In some cases, Salmonella can spread beyond the intestines and cause severe complications.

More Products Could Be Identified

The FDA says its investigation remains ongoing and that additional information will be provided as it becomes available. The jalape?ontamination has resulted in multiple downstream recalls involving products made with the affected peppers.

Consumers should continue checking FDA updates if they have purchased prepared foods containing fresh jalape?during the affected period.

Important: This warning does not mean that all products sold at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Target, Walmart or the other retailers are affected. Only specifically identified products, UPCs and date ranges are included in the warnings.
